Treatment programs run on staff time, and it is the resource most programs have least of. Research on substance use treatment programs puts annual counselor turnover between 18.5% and 25%, and turnover among program directors has been measured as high as 54% (study published in PMC). Every hour your team spends on work that could be designed away is an hour taken from clients.
Packing is one of those hours. It shows up in three places.
1. The calls before admission
Families want to get this right, so they call. Can he bring his own shampoo? Is a blanket allowed? What about her vape? Each answer is short, but the calls come in at all hours, and they land on the same admissions staff who are trying to verify insurance and schedule beds.
The fix: give families one place to get it right. Your admissions page can link to ready-made kits instead of holding stock. That costs the program nothing, and it answers the packing question before the phone rings.
2. The search at the door
Belongings searches are careful work, often involving two staff, an inventory form and a signature (UTMC detox guideline). The more prohibited items in a bag, the longer it takes. When we compared the packing rules of 27 programs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, regular mouthwash was banned at 25 of them and aerosols at 15. Those are the first things families pack.
The fix: a sealed kit built to your list arrives with nothing to pull.
3. The supply runs
When a client arrives with nothing, someone has to find shower shoes and a toothbrush. That usually means the donation closet or a staff member's drive to a pharmacy.
The fix: keep a case of compliant kits on hand for scholarship, transfer and same-day admissions.
Small changes, repeated every admission
None of these tasks is large on its own. But they repeat with every admission, and they fall on staff who are already stretched. Removing them is one of the few staffing improvements that doesn't need a new hire.
We build sealed admission kits to each facility's written policy, item for item. You approve the list before anything ships, and if your policy changes, we re-spec at no charge.
Send us your policy and see a free kit spec for your program.
