Short answer: Usually not. Of the 81 treatment programs in our database that publish a rule on mouthwash, 56 (69%) don't allow it. Every program sets its own rules, so check the specific program before you pack.
- Not allowed: 56 programs
- Allowed with limits: 25 programs
- Allowed: 0 programs
Why programs restrict mouthwash
Most mouthwash contains alcohol, often more than 20 percent. Treatment programs keep alcohol off the unit in any form, so many ban mouthwash by name. Others don't name it but ban every toiletry that contains alcohol, which covers most mouthwash anyway. A few allow alcohol-free mouthwash, and some ban mouthwash completely, even alcohol-free versions, so staff don't have to check every label.
What to do instead
Leave regular mouthwash at home. If the program's list says alcohol-free toiletries are fine, an alcohol-free mouthwash in a sealed bottle is the safest choice. Otherwise skip it; toothpaste and a toothbrush are allowed almost everywhere.
Rules by program
Each rule is taken from the program's own published packing list, checked October 2026. "General rule" means the program doesn't name the item but bans a category that includes it.
