Short answer: It depends on the program. Of the 110 treatment programs in our database that publish a rule on a phone, 58 don't allow it, 51 allow it with limits, 1 allow it. Every program sets its own rules, so check the specific program before you pack.
- Not allowed: 58 programs
- Allowed with limits: 51 programs
- Allowed: 1 programs
Why programs restrict a phone
Programs limit phones for a few practical reasons: to protect other patients' privacy (no photos or recordings), to cut off contact with people or apps that can lead to use, and to keep the focus on treatment. Rules range from a full ban, to phones locked away at admission and returned at discharge, to set times when patients can use them.
What to do instead
Before admission, write the phone numbers your loved one will need on paper: family, work, a sponsor, the pharmacy. If the phone comes along, bring the charger and expect it to be locked up. Laptops and tablets are banned at most programs.
Rules by program
Each rule is taken from the program's own published packing list, checked October 2026. "General rule" means the program doesn't name the item but bans a category that includes it.
