Short answer: It depends on the program. Of the 67 treatment programs in our database that publish a rule on a pillow or blanket, 26 don't allow it, 9 allow it with limits, 13 allow it, and 19 provide it. Every program sets its own rules, so check the specific program before you pack.

Why programs restrict a pillow or blanket
Most programs supply pillows, blankets and linens and don't allow personal ones. Bedding is hard to search, can hide items, and can bring bugs or germs onto a shared unit. A smaller group of programs allows a personal pillow or blanket, sometimes only if it is new and still sealed.
What to do instead
Don't pack bedding unless the program's list says it's allowed. If comfort matters, a soft sweatshirt or extra socks are allowed nearly everywhere and do much of the same job.

Each rule is taken from the program's own published packing list, checked October 2026. "General rule" means the program doesn't name the item but bans a category that includes it.
